Ethics4Challenges ENS Event: Epistemic obstacles to the governance of algorithmic systems

On Thursday, 22.05.2025, from 16:00 to 17:30, the ENS chair of Sociology of Technology will host an event in the ENS co-working space as part of the Erasmus+ Project ETHICS4CHALLENGES.
In this event, Dr. Silvia Milano, a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Exeter (UK) and a Humboldt Fellow at the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCM), LMU Munich, will give a talk with the title “Epistemic obstacles to the governance of algorithmic systems.”  In this talk, she will introduce the phenomenon of epistemic fragmentation and describe how it creates obstacles for the governance of algorithmic systems that profile and interact with individuals. Using the example of online personalised targeting, she shows how epistemic fragmentation amplifies the harms individuals are exposed to, leads to epistemic injustice, and cannot be tackled using current regulatory strategies. She invites us to rethink a civic governance model for algorithmic systems as an antidote.

Dr. Milano’s research interests are in the Epistemology and Ethics of AI. Her recent work has focused on AI and epistemic injustice, the ethical challenges of recommender systems, polarisation on social networks, and the impacts of LLMs on education. She is currently developing a philosophical analysis of recommender systems, encompassing their social, epistemological, and ethical dimensions.

Dr. Milano was previously a Golding Junior Research Fellow at Brasenose College and Research Fellow in Philosophy of AI at the Future of Humanity Institute, University of Oxford (2020-2022), and Postdoctoral Researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute (2018-2020). She obtained a PhD in Philosophy from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Am Donnerstag, dem 22.05.2025, findet von 16:00 bis 17:30 Uhr im ENS Co-Working Space eine Veranstaltung des ENS-Lehrstuhls für Techniksoziologie im Rahmen des Erasmus+-Projekts ETHICS4CHALLENGES statt.
In diesem Vortrag wird Dr. Silvia Milano, Senior Lecturer in Philosophie an der University of Exeter (UK) und Humboldt-Fellow am Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCM) der LMU München, das Thema „Epistemic obstacles to the governance of algorithmic systems” behandeln.  Darin stellt sie das Phänomen der epistemischen Fragmentierung vor und beschreibt, wie es Hindernisse für die Steuerung von algorithmischen Systemen schafft, die Profile von und mit Individuen erstellen. Am Beispiel des personalisierten Online-Targetings zeigt sie, wie die epistemische Fragmentierung den Schaden, dem der Einzelne ausgesetzt ist, verstärkt, zu epistemischer Ungerechtigkeit führt und mit den derzeitigen Regulierungsstrategien nicht zu bewältigen ist. Sie fordert uns auf, ein bürgerliches Governance-Modell für algorithmische Systeme als Gegenmittel zu überdenken.

Dr. Milanos Forschungsinteressen liegen in der Erkenntnistheorie und der Ethik der KI. Derzeit konzentrieren sich ihre Arbeiten auf KI und epistemische Ungerechtigkeit, die ethischen Herausforderungen von Empfehlungssystemen, Polarisierung in sozialen Netzwerken und die Auswirkungen von LLMs auf die Bildung. Derzeit entwickelt sie eine philosophische Analyse von Empfehlungssystemen, die deren soziale, erkenntnistheoretische und ethische Dimensionen einbezieht.

Zuvor war Dr. Milano Golding Junior Research Fellow am Brasenose College sowie Forschungsstipendiatin für Philosophie der KI am Future of Humanity Institute der Universität Oxford (2020–2022) und Postdoctoral Researcher am Oxford Internet Institute (2018–2020). Sie promovierte in Philosophie an der London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
